For rare or valuable books, we build custom made clamshell boxes (also called Solander boxes). Click on a small image to see a larger image (opens in a new window).
The empty clamshell. Cover and lining of buckram (bookcloth). Different linings can be made, especially buffered archival paper in assorted colours, but we generally recommend cloth.
With the book in place. Note the close fit to prevent movement and rubbing of the book.
Clamshells allow the front of the book to be opened without taking it from its protective box.
