Introducing Roger Perry
Bookbinder & Fine Finisher
Roger is a Gold Finisher / Bookbinder who completed his six year apprenticeship as a gold finisher during 1961 - 1967 at George Bayntun's,
(incorporating Robert Riviere and Son), Bath, England. He remained with Bayntun's until 1969.
Two years after completing his apprenticeship, and up until 1975, Roger worked for Cedric Chivers, Bath,
as a bookbinder, where his duties included:
· General library and reference binding,
· Guillotining / Three Knife Trimming,
· Blocking,
· Short run edition binding.
His skills, developed over more than 40 years, include gold leaf finishing, blocking, gilding, general
bookbinding and repairs and leather desk tops. Roger has a large collection of his own hand tools, including
decorative rolls.

For the past 12 years, until May 2007, Roger was employed at Chivers Period Bookbinders, Bath, as their Fine Finisher.
His tasks included:
· Gold leaf finishing all leather books, from antiquarian to presentation bindings,
· Gold finishing and restoration of leather table tops and writing desks,
· Gold Foil Blocking - using Prazimark and Marshalls blocking machines,
· General repairs - rebacking in leather and cloth using materials such as morocco leather and calf,
· Case making,
· Guillotining / Three Knife Trimming,
· Gold initialling or lettering onto purses, wallets, filo faxes, and many other personal items.

Some of the projects he was proud to work on include:
Mayors' presentation books,
Hand finished bound Hollywood scripts,
Gold finished Presentation books for Royal family and politicians,
Rebound and hand finished antiquarian manuscripts for various colleges and libraries.
Roger and his wife, Penny, have recently emigrated to Queensland and we are pleased to be able
to employ Roger as a sub-contractor to our business. This allows us to now offer fine finishing
